A delightful Saturday morning at the Fiera di Rimini where the junior men contested their six apparatus finals.
Star of the show was the 17-year-old Tommaso Brugnami. Competing in front of a home crowd with his family and friends in the stands, the Italian rising star clinched both the floor and rings title while also pocketing the silver on vault, the apparatus where he’s the reigning junior World Champion. Another gymnast with a bright future, France’s Anthony Mansard started of the day with a silver on floor, followed by a silver on parallel bars. However, he saved the very best till last. Acing his horizontal bar routine, Mansard finally stepped up onto the highest podium, one tenth ahead of Belgium’s Kyano Schepers and 0.133 more than Italy’s Manuel Berettera.
The silver on parallel bars was not Mansard’s alone. He shared it with not one but two other gymnasts: Germany’s Jonas Eder and Ukraine’s Sviatoslav Shved. All three gymnasts scored 13.700 and ties are not broken in junior finals, so we witnessed the trio together on the podium. The victory went to Great Britain’s Uzair Chowdhury, the only gymnast in this final to post an execution score higher than 9. His teammate Sol Scott excelled on vault where he was the only gymnast to perform two vaults with a 5.2 difficulty value. His extra D score gave him a cushion over Brugnami to secure the title. Sergio Kovacs from Spain grabbed bronze.
More British success came courtesy of Gabriel Langton on rings. Superior execution brought him into second position, ahead delighted Vincent Lindpointner (AUT) who was all smiles as he collected a well-earned bronze medal. Another smiley face on the podium belonged to Alan Moullec, who edged past Sol Scott for the bronze on floor.
Pommel horse is clearly an apparatus loved in Armenia. Reigning junior World Champion Hamlet Manukyan impressed with impeccable form, winning the gold medal with a great score of 14.500. His teammate Mamikon Khachatryan made the nation double proud as he clinched the bronze. S andwiched between the two Armenians was David Ivanov from Bulgaria who showed the most difficult exercise of this final, worth 5.7.
Congratulations to the medallists!
