Women's Artistic Gymnastics

Introduction

Technique, balance and precision, are key features female artistic gymnasts need to posses to make it to the top. Every year, European Gymnastics organises the European Championships, with team event and event finals for seniors, team, all-around and event finals for juniors in even years and all-around and event finals for seniors only in odd years. Besides that, we hold a yearly training camp for junior gymnasts where we have had the pleasure of guiding future Olympians, European and World medallists. We also aim to increase the knowledge about gymnastics training and judging in order to maintain an excellent level in Europe and further develop the sport in our 50 member countries.

You will see women compete on four apparatus: vault, uneven bars, beam and floor.

Introduction to Women's Artistic Gymnastics

Vault

Running at maximum speed, the gymnast hits the springboard, then goes into a flight phase, followed in tenths of seconds by a short but equally explosive push off the apparatus. A second flight phase follows, as high and far as possible, with saltos and twists to be ended by a good and secure landing. Dynamism, power and precision characterise the different flight phases.

Uneven bars

Hugely spectacular, the bars require force, courage and coordination with numerous grip and bar changes. An optimal exercise is characterised by an original combination of different elements as flight elements, rotations and movements above, below or between the bars.

Beam

Being only 10 cm wide, a well-developed sense of balance and a great power of concentration is essential to master the beam. A good exercise includes acrobatic and gymnastics elements and series, often in connection, resulting in fast-flowing movements. Leaps, turns, somersaults, it all has to be included in the programme.

Floor

Accompanied by music, the floor exercise evokes true emotions and often get the audience on their feet. A dynamic exchange of difficult acrobatic series and dance-gymnastics elements, the harmony between the exercise and the music plays an important role, as well as the expressiveness and elegance of the gymnast.
