Thirty years after the very first European TeamGym competition, then known as Euroteam, took place in Finland, TeamGym is back. Today, Espoo welcomes gymnasts from all over the continent for the 16th European TeamGym Championships.
Following an Opening Ceremony featuring Finnish gymnasts from different disciplines, the junior teams took centre stage. With a place in Friday’s finals at the Espoo Metro Areena at stake, they gave everything in the first competition of the Championships.
All teams have to perform on floor, tumble and trampet. These three scores are then combined to form the total score which determines the final ranking.
The Junior Men’s Teams were the first to take to the floor and kick off the day’s competition. Sweden, with an impressive score of 53.150, topped the ranking, thanks in particular to the highest score on tumble (18.250). Denmark and Norway completed the top three with 50.850 and 50.600 respectively.
In the Junior Mixed Teams, Great Britain (49.900) took the lead, recording two of the highest scores (tumble: 17.200 and trampet: 17.900). Sweden and Norway also stood out, with total scores of 47.450 and 45.350 respectively.
And to conclude this first day, Iceland claimed the top spot in the third and final competition, for the Women’s Teams. They scored 51.850, putting them ahead of Italy (49.650) and Sweden (49.050).
Qualified to Friday’s finals:
