The 6th – in the series of 8- individual World Cup qualifying for the 2020 Olympic Games was held last weekend in the Australian city of Melbourne.
Olympic Champions Epke Zonderland (NED) and Eleftherios Petrounias (GRE) earned valuable points as they both won their signature event, high bar and rings respectively. Zonderland now has the maximum score of 90 points for 3 victories and ties Hidetaka Miyachi (JPN). The highest average score will determine who gets the Olympic spot. For Petrounias, it was his first win so he needs to win both remaining events, in Baku and Doha, and make sure his average is higher than that of China’s Liu Yang. Russia’s Vladislav Poliashov upped his total to 90 points as well, getting a slight advantage over You Hao (CHN).
Jade Carey (USA) was the only gymnast to win two gold medals in Melbourne, earning the top score on vault and floor. Her Olympic spot seems secured now. Ukraine’s Diana Varinska won bars ahead of Georgia Godwin (AUS) and Daria Spiridonova. EYOF beam winner Ondine Achampong (GBR) made celebrated her senior debut with the silver medal ahead of Anastasia Bachynska (UKR). Italians Vanessa Ferrari and Lara Mori continue to battle on floor, finishing second and third at this competition.
The Chinese delegation couldn’t participate in Melbourne due to Australian government travel restrictions due to the coronavirus outbreak.
