At the World Cup in Artistic Gymnastics this weekend in Doha (QAT), twenty gymnasts earned their nominative tickets to this summer’s Olympic Games in Paris (FRA). Among those lucky 20 … 8 European gymnasts: 4 men and 4 women!
The World Cup circuit provides one of the main opportunities for Olympic qualification this year. Eligible gymnasts get points awarded based on their rank in each apparatus final throughout the series, which began in Cairo (EGY) in February and passed through Cottbus (GER) and Baku (AZE) before terminating in Doha (QAT). Top eligible performers earn 30 points, second gets 25, third 20, and so on. The gymnast’s three highest points totals counted, with the top two and a maximum of one per country on each apparatus advancing to the Games.
On floor, Croatia’s Aurel Benovic benefitted from an excellent showing in Doha, where he finished fourth, earning 25 points to total 57 points and clinch his ticket to Paris.
We witnessed a nail-biting ending of the competition on rings with Armenia’s Vahagn Davtyan having to win to secure his ticket. And he did exactly that. With slim margin of 0.033, he accumulated 75 points, equal to France’s Samir Ait Said. Both rings stars will aim to shine in the City of Light.
2020 European Champion on high bar Robert Tvorogal used his skills on this apparatus to gain 80 points and his date with the Olympics.
Already sure of her ticket at the previous World Cup, Bulgaria’s Valentina Georgieva earned the bronze medal in Doha and ended her quest with 80 points. Reigning Olympic Champion on bars, Nina Derwael, focused all her efforts on beam after suffering a shoulder injury that kept her out of last year’s World Championships. And the gamble paid off, with ‘perfect’ 90 points the Belgian superstar didn’t even need to compete in Doha anymore.
On floor, both tickets went to Europe. Charlize Moerz won the floor series titles, becoming the first Austrian gymnast to do so. Spain’s Laura Casabuena needed the 30 points earned by winning bronze in Doha to qualify.
Congratulations to all successful gymnasts!
