Biles cements GOAT status with Olympic win, Alice D’Amato fourth

For the 4th final of the Olympic Gymnastics competition in Paris (FRA), the highly anticipated women’s all-around final, fans from all over the world flocked to the iconic Bercy Arena, eager to witness a history-making evening.

The return of Simone Biles, already the G.O.A.T., the ‘Greatest of All Time’, spiked huge interest from media and spectator alike. And the 2016 Olympic Champion did not disappoint! Starting off with a huge Yurchenko double pike vault, 27-year-old Biles overcame a break during her bars routine to finish off strong on beam and floor, easily clinching the gold medal, becoming only the third female gymnast ever, after Larisa Latynina (URS) and Vera Caslavska (TCH), to capture two Olympic all-around titles, and the only one to do so in non-consecutive Games.

Tokyo 2020 Vice-Olympic Champion Rebeca Andrade (BRA) gave Biles a run for her money though. Her superb Cheng and exquisite bars routine put her in the lead at the halfway stage. Keeping the positive vibe going on beam and floor, the Brazilian superstar seemed delighted with her performance, and rightly so. Another silver medal for Andrade!

Defending Champion Sunisa Lee had a tough time since winning gold in Tokyo. Health issues took their toll on her career and for a while she didn’t know if she could compete again at the highest level. Luckily, Lee’s fortune turned and she’s glowing again her in Paris. Highlighted by a fabulous bars set, Lee tumbled her way to bronze in a thrilling final rotation.

Fun fact: all medallists earned their second Olympic all-around medal, a feat never achieved before today.

Italy’s Alice D’Amato had the competition of a lifetime, coming so so close to the podium. Her grand total of 56.333 placed D’Amato just 0,132 behind Lee. Satisfied, the 21-year-old Italian, who won silver with her teammates the day before yesterday, said:

I'm very happy about placing fourth. I showed my absolute best gymnastics today. Simone Biles, Sunisa Lee and Rebeca Andrade are all Olympic gold medallists and finishing just behind them makes me very proud. I came fifth at the last World Championships. Now I've improved to fourth place. As you can see, I like to climb higher step by step.

Our special mention of the day goes to Helen Kevric. The 16-year-old junior European Champion from Germany placed eighth in her first ever major international all-around final as a senior. Well done, Helen!
