Bronze and Paris 2024 Olympic ticket for British men

At the World Championships in Artistic Gymnastics in the city of Liverpool (GBR), the men’s team final promised plenty of entertainment with the host nation qualifying in second place.

As scores start from zero again in each final and with the thrilling three-up three-count format, the competition unfolded like a true rollercoaster. Positions changed constantly as seemingly lost chances were recovered and leads diminished.

Bringing the house down with every step they take, the British team featuring Joe Fraser, Giarnni Regini-Moran, Jake Jarman, Courtney Tulloch and James Hall started strong on floor but came undone on pommel horse, posting a mere 35.232 on this event. Finding their focus again on rings, the team sat in eighth and last position at the halfway stage. Today the phrase ‘Anything can happen’ definitely was applicable, however, and the men regrouped and redeemed themselves on parallel bars, anchored by Joe Fraser’s 15.000 and high bar. As the last score flashed, they found themselves in third place, clinching the bronze medal and the much-conveyed ticket to the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Jake Jarman was last up on high bar and told us afterwards:

It was a rollercoaster. A good start on floor and then pommels really set the mood for the rest of the comp. It was a tough competition, almost like a dogfight. Clawing our way back to third, it was hard to process at the time. I was nervous for my high bar routine but told myself it’s the same as training. I know I can do the skills and I felt like I could really help redeem myself and our team score.

Redemption also came for China that struggled throughout qualifications but showed their actual worth in the final, cruising to victory with a wide 4 point advantage. This marks their 13th victory at the world stage. Top qualifiers Japan couldn’t capitalize on their 8 point lead in qualifications, settling for silver.

The most consistent performance of the night came from Italy! Going into the last rotation they were the only team not to count a major mistake. Ending on pommel horse is always a tough task. Unfortunately they counted one fall. Their total score settled them into 4th place, their best ever finish! An ecstatic team leader Nicola Bartolini:

I’m realising what just happened. Three years ago we were in Stuttgart, in the world championships before the Olympic Games. The team wasn’t qualified for the Olympic Games. And now we are here, fourth in the world. That’s incredible. My teammates are in their first world championships and they made the final, and they take the fourth place. It’s amazing.

A special shoutout to Spain as well. Their gymnasts have excelled this year both at Europeans and Worlds, showing their potential with a 6th place finish here. Another historic result!

Congratulations to all medallists!

GOLD China 257.858

SILVER Japan 253.395
