As the World Cup series in Artistic Gymnastics kicked off in Cottbus (GER), the Russian invasion of Ukraine took over the world news. For the Ukrainian gymnasts, coaches and judges caught unaware, it was hard to focus on the job that lay ahead. Showing great maturity, 18-year-ol Illia Kovtun, the 2020 junior European all-around Champion, collected gold on parallel bars and silver on pommel horse, Nazar Chepurniy clinched silver on vault, while Daniela Batrona, 15, won balance beam.
Tokyo 2020 Olympian Alba Petisco (ESP) and Tisha Volleman (NED) each earned their first World Cup titles, plus an additional medal. Volleman edged teammate Sanna Veerman to win uneven bars and added bronze on floor, while Petisco won floor with a routine featuring four double-salto passes and took bronze on bars. The superior difficulty of a 1.5-twisting Yurchenko and a handspring front tuck full lifted Tjasa Kysselef (SLO) to the title on vault. In her World Cup debut, balletic Anastasiya Smantsar earned a hat trick of medals, with silver on floor and bronze on bars and beam.
Yahor Sharamkou stood on the top of the podium after winning floor. Olympic bronze medallist Artur Davtyan (ARM) showed characteristic excellent form as he sailed to gold on vault, including a stunning 9.5 Execution score for his first vault, a handspring layout with 2.5 twists. Thirty-five-year-old Filip Ude (CRO) floored his competitors on pommel horse, while rings specialist Ibrahim Colak (TUR) topped the leaderboard on his signature apparatus.
