The highlight of their career, writing history for Austria by winning the European bronze medal at last year’s European Championships, came less than 6 months ago for Eva Gasser (24) and Franziska Seiner (17). And they looked for to the World Championships in Geneva (SUI) at the end of May which should have been their last competition. However, this event got postponed due to the corona outbreak and the duo decided to retire early without a final farewell.
During the 2019 World Cup series Gasser and Seiner caused a sensation with fourth and fifth places. Now Eva Gasser explains the reasoning behind their decision:
We lack the perspective, the [not yet fixed] new World Championships date is too far away for us. Of course we support the postponement of the World Championships because of the corona pandemic, because health always comes first. It was planned that Franziska and I would stop after the World Championships and after the State Championships in June. The postponements have now led to the decision to step down immediately. Franziska will take a break from sports acrobatics. I myself plan to work as a coach in my club
Their personal coach Hannah Suntinger adds:
The 2020 World Championships would have been the crowning finale for all of us. Unfortunately, the current situation has thwarted us. I am very sorry to no longer be able to accompany two such talented and determined athletes on their way, but I am happy about all the moments and successes that we can look back on together.
Leonor Vareta, Austria's national coach from Portugal, will remember the historic collaboration with pride:
Although it doesn't come as a surprise, it still saddens me to realise that it's over. Nothing ever prepared any of us to deal with something like this pandemic. All of a sudden half way through a season, three months before our biggest competition it's over ... It was an absolute pleasure to coach these two ladies. Their commitment, their joy, their hard work: no wonder we made history together! From my side, as their National Coach, it was an honor to be part of their last beautiful journey, they will surely never be forgotten.
Wishing Eva and Franziska all the best!
