While Stuttgart hosted the all-around World Cup, a strong participants field gathered in Baku (AZE) for the individual apparatus World Cup, also part of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic qualification options.
Many European federations sent their gymnasts, eager to earn valuable points that count towards the overall ranking after the eight World Cup stages as the best gymnast per apparatus will earn an Olympic ticket. Collecting 18 medals, 4 of those gold, the European gymnasts lived up to the expectations …
Israel’s Artem Dolgopyat excelled on floor, posting an incredible 15.066 to claim the gold medal ahead of Switzerland’s Pablo Braegger and European Games champion Ray Zapata (ESP). Great Britain’s Courtney Tulloch led the challenge on rings with a massive 6.5 difficulty for first place, ahead of Nikita Simonov (AZE) and Igor Radivilov (UKR). The third all-European podium came on high bar where the reigning World Champion, the former World Champion and the reigning European Champion stood side by side: gold for Epke Zonderland (NED), silver for Tin Srbic (CRO) and bronze for Oliver Hegi (SUI). Vladislav Poliashov signed for the fourth European victory in Baku, on parallel bars. He held off a strong challenge by Turkey’s Ferhat Arican. On pommel horse, France’s Cyril Tommasone showed by far the best execution but a 0.8 difference in difficulty left him in second place behind Japan’s Kohei Kameyama. On vault, the podium featured the same gymnasts as at the 2012 Olympics! Korea’s Hak Seon Yang won, Igor Radivilov took silver and Denis Ablyazin bronze.
The USA’s Jade Carey was the only double winner in Baku, topping the standings on both vault and floor. The Italian duo Lara Mori – Vanessa Ferrari finished second and third on floor respectively. China’s Jiaqi Lyu won uneven bars, with Russia’s Anastasia Iliankova taking silver. France’s Marine Boyer also clinched a silver medal, on beam, behind Australia’s Emma Nedov.
