Golden delight for Russians and Whitlock on day 1 of event finals

The first five apparatus finals were held today at Szczecin’s Netto Arena. The Russian team won the bulk of the available continental titles, starting with World Champion Artur Dalaloyan’s victory on floor over Israel’s top qualifier Artem Dolgopyat and another Russian, Dmitrii Lankin, took the bronze medal. Dalaloyan had the lowest difficulty score of the three but his excellent execution gave him the advantage. Dalaloyan plans to upgrade his routine but didn’t compete his new tumbling pass yet as it’s still a bit too inconsistent.

Denis Abliazin tied with Italy’s Marco Lodadio for the top score on rings. Based on the higher execution score, Abliazin grabbed the gold while the World bronze medallist dropped to silver. Job well done for Abliazin:

I am very satisfied. The competition at the still rings was very tough. Soon there will be more and more professional gymnasts, and you have to be ready for it

The last performer on rings Vahagn Davtyan snuck passed recently crowned all-around European Champion Nikita Nagornyy for the bronze medal.

Returning to competition after back surgery, Maria Paseka (RUS) showed the most difficult vaults to win her second European title on this apparatus:

I'd like to thank all the people who have taken part in my preparation for these championships and helped me win this medal. I'm very happy to have finally come back and claimed that vault title

2017 European Champion Coline Devillard (FRA) claimed the silver while Great Britain’s Ellie Downie added the bronze to her tally.

Specialist Anastasia Iliankova and teammate Angelina Melnikova went 1-2 on bars, with Italian talent Alice D’Amato winning her first senior European medal.

The only non-Russian winner of the day was Great Britain’s Max Whitlock. His impressive 6.9 difficulty score on pommel horse was by far the highest of the final, 7 tenths more than his nearest rivals. The Olympic Champion also performed cleanest so the gold medal returns home with him:

I’m really happy, the build-up has been a big learning curve for me, there’s been a lot of pressure and expectation put on me which I’ve had to learn how to cope with. This gives me a huge confidence boost. I always said last year that I was gaining experience and building my routine so to now produce a score like that and win gold feels really good. I hit my target score which feels great and I have a bit more to add in so I’m really comfortable with where I’m at right now

French specialist Cyril Tommasone placed second, equalling his performance in the 2011 Europeans, and edging Russia’s Vladislav Poliashov.
