D-day at the Games of the 33rd Olympiad in Paris! After a spectacular, trailblazing Opening Ceremony, held in the epicenter of the vibrant French capital, today marked the start of the gymnastics competitions.
With participants spread over three subdivisions, the wait for the final results was long and nerve-wrecking. China put on a display, earning the top positions in team, all-around and three apparatus finals as Zhang Boheng led his team with a massive 88.597 total, earning first place also on horizontal bar. Teammate Zou Jingyuan posted the top scores on rings and parallel bars.
Great Britain’s Jake Jarman impressed on floor, after a shaky start on vault, where he’s the reigning World Champion: “It's just the excitement of the atmosphere. I get quite a buzz out of seeing a crowd and just hearing how much support we all get. After the first piece, I tend to settle in really well. Vault was a bit shaky, but after that I was really calm. We definitely managed to kind of gain some momentum and kind of keep it going for other people. And I think that's normally the thing we try and do, and try and replicate in training and even at smaller competitions."
Double World Champion and triple European Champion Rhys McClenaghan came into these Games calm, confident and with his eyes on the prize. Scoring 15.200 today was just one of the steps in his plan, the step into the final: “I feel very good, I feel confident, happy. I'm just glad I got the job done today. It was good to just do a routine in this stadium with amazing crowd that came out to watch today. To perform my routine once again, it was a similar feeling to what I get in training. That feeling is always good when I do a big routine in training. To do it out here on the big stage means the world."
European and World bronze medallist Nazar Chepurnyi (UKR) took the lead on vault, in what proved to be a successful qualification round for our European gymnasts!
