In a packed and passionate Bercy Arena, the top 8 men’s teams from the qualification rounds battled it out for a place on the podium, and the highest honour: the title of Olympic Champion.
As often is the case in a men’s team final, the gold medal decision was taken only after the very last routine of the evening. Entering the final rotation, China headed to horizontal bar with a solid lead over eternal rival Japan. However, scoring only 39.766 on this apparatus, the second to last total of the evening, the Chinese team opened the door for Japan. Anchored by 2020 Olympic Champion Hashimoto Daiki, Japan went all out, edging past China 259.594 – 259.062. It’s the 8th Olympic team title for the Japanese men!
The battle for bronze between Great Britain, Ukraine and USA, ended on pommel horse, with apparatus specialist Stephen Nedoroscik clinching bronze for the US in a spectacular fashion. Great Britain ended fourth, close to eight tenths of a point ahead of European Champions Ukraine. Italy, Switzerland and Canada round out the top 8.
