Lihie Raz enjoyed a thrilling outing on Tuesday and put her Leipzig preparations into practice with a treble of victories in the online European Championships preparation event, presented with Elevien.
It was a thriller of an event on the men’s side of competition, with Olympic medallists Jake Jarman and Harry Hepworth two victors from an all-action lineup.
For Raz, the 21-year-old from Israel showed the prowess we are so used to seeing from previous European Championships, as the 2020 floor bronze medallist first saw her floor routine achieve success here, before a split-score on vault, victory on uneven bars and bronze on the balance beam.
In what was a day that saw Israel collect 10 women’s podium positions from a possible 12, Raz wasted no time in making the hype a reality. Considerable victories on uneven bars and floor made a significant statement, while on vault her 12.950 was matched by teammate Yali Shoshani.
On the balance beam, it was Croatia’s Mila Prpic who came out on top though, and by some distance. Prpic’s 12.950 was 0.900 ahead of the chasing pack, with Roni Shamay and Lihie Raz behind.
And while Israel largely won the medals in women’s competition, on the men’s side it was an open book.
Coming into competition it was easy to have eyes on a Great Britain team packed with European, World and Olympic medallists. And few in Europe at present are more renowned than Jake Jarman.
The vaulting supremo picked up bronze in Paris on the floor, but here he was at his absolutely enthralling best to win gold on vault. As the reigning European champion, he did it in the style we’ve come to know and be amazed by. Jarman’s 14.733 from his two vaults saw him ahead of teammate Harry Hepworth, with 2022 World champion Artur Davtyan of Armenia completing the top three.
Hepworth would collect a victory of his own though, in a style of event he’s come to thrive in. After big victories in the Perfect 10 at the end of 2024, Hepworth won on rings with 14.400, just 0.100 ahead of rings specialist Courtney Tulloch, with Artur Avetisyan on 14.200.
For Italy, it was a successful day too, notably on the pommel horse. While Armenia’s exciting duo of Mamikon Khachatryan and Hamlet Manukyan reached the podium, it was Gabriele Targhetta’s 14.750 that secured the top prize.
Italy would thrive too on both the floor and the horizontal bar. To floor first, where Mario Macchiati’s 13.325 put him ahead of Arthur Ballon of France, with Lorenzo Bonicelli in third.
And then on that bar, Bonicelli ensured he wasn’t out of a top place for long. His 13.666 was the top result for an all-Italian podium, as Yumin Abbadini (13.333) and Carlo Macchini (13.333) both came close behind.
Completing our day with parallel bars, it was a significant evening for Serbia’s Petar Vefic. His 13.233 proved the best score on the apparatus, with Jarman and Abbadini ensuring that their nations were again represented in the top spots.
