Day two of the apparatus finals at Bercy Arena today saw the men compete on rings and vault, while the women performed on the uneven bars.
Rio 2016 Olympic Champion Eleftherios Petrounias carried Greece’s hopes on his strong shoulders as he entered the rings final. Nailing his routine, the record holding seven times European Champion earned 15.100, clinching the bronze behind the Chinese duo Liu Yang, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Champion, and Zou Jingyuan. As in Tokyo, France’s superstar Samir Ait Said placed fourth, a mere tenth behind his good friend Petrounias. Türkiye’s Adem Asil tied for the highest difficulty, finishing fifth.
The level of the vault final was so high that thousands of points marked the difference between winning a medal or not. After his historic victory on floor yesterday, Philippines’ star Carlos Edriel Yulo claimed another gold medal, ahead of 2022 World Champion Artur Davtyan who upgraded to silver after winning bronze in Tokyo. Bronze went to Great Britain’s Harry Hepworth who beat his teammate Jake Jarman, the reigning World Champion, by a mere 0,017. Croatia’s Aurel Benovic and Ukraine’s Nazar Chepurnyi were both within a tenth of the silver and bronze, finishing fifth and sixth respectively.
Defending Olympic Champion on uneven bars, Nina Derwael of Belgium, was delighted to make the final, after a shoulder injury sidelined her for the World Championships in her own country. The Belgian star gave it her all, posting a 14.766, for a routine with 6.5 difficulty. A medal wasn’t meant to be this time as Derwael ended up in fourth position. Algeria’s Kaylia Nemour performed a dazzlingly difficult exercise to win the first Olympic gold for Africa, with Qui Qiyuan (CHN) in silver medal position. Sunisa Lee repeated the bronze she also won in Tokyo on this apparatus.
