Preview of the Artistic Gymnastics competition at the 2nd European Games

The last two disciplines to step onto the gymnastics podium in the fabulous Minsk Arena are men’s and women’s artistic gymnastics. In these Olympic disciplines up to 90 gymnasts (48 men and 42 women) will compete.

 

Competition format

During qualification, the competitors aim to qualify for the all-around and event finals.

In the all-around final the top 18 competitors (max. 2 per country) on all events combined will compete for the title. There will be alternation between men and women. The scores start from zero in the final.

In event finals the top 6 competitors (max. 1 per country) on each event compete. Men’s floor is followed by women’s vault and men’s pommel horse in alternation, rings together with uneven bars, men’s vault with women’s beam, parallel bars with floor; the finals end with high bar on its own. Scores from qualification don’t carry on to the final.

 

Who to watch

Women’s Artistic Gymnastics

Reigning World Champion on bars Nina Derwael (BEL), who skipped the recent Europeans, aims to compete her new bars routine. She’ll be joined by Great Britain’s former European Champion Becky Downie and rising star Georgia-Mae Fenton, Russian star Angelina Melnikova and current European uneven bars Champion Anastasia Iliankova. Ukraine sends Angelina Radivilova, Diana Varinska and first-year senior Anastasia Bachynska while Romania is represented by Denisa Golgota and France by European bronze medallist on beam Lorette Charpy.

 

Men’s Artistic Gymnastics

In the men’s competition, defending all-around champion Oleg Verniaiev will compete alongside his Ukraine teammates Igor Radivilov and Petro Pakhnyuk. One more 2015 gold medallists will return: Russia’s David Belyavkskiy who returned home from Baku with a complete set of medals: gold with his team, silver on parallel bars and bronze on floor. He’s joined by European medallists Dmitri Lankin and Vladyslav Poliashov. 2016 junior European Champion Giarnni Regini-Moran (GBR) returns to international competition after a string of injuries, alongside teammates Brinn Bevan and Jake Jarman. Cyprus has high hopes for their star Marios Georgiou while Israel has great medal chances with Artem Dolgopyat, Alexander Shatilov and Andrey Medvedev.
