On the first day of Artistic Gymnastics apparatus finals, the men competed in the floor and pommel horse finals, while the women went for vault glory.
In a thrilling pommel horse final, triple European Champion Rhys McClenaghan (IRL) opted for a huge routine, including a new skill to score a personal best on his signature apparatus, 15.533, to overtake Kazakhstan’s Nariman Kurbanov by one tenth. A 10-year plan coming through for the trailblazing Irishman who now holds the European, World and Olympic crown:
There's the tiniest little hesitation during that routine where you can either go for the difficult skill towards the end of the routine, or you don't. (Without adding the new skill) it would have scored a 15.2. I had to suck it up hard to get it done. I put that new skill in, and it worked out today because I came away with a personal best score. I can't ask for more than that. When I performed my routine, I wasn't thinking about the medals. I was thinking my job was accomplished. That was what all of those thoughts and emotions were. All the hours of training I put in came through today
Bronze went to the USA’s Stephen Nedoroscik while British icon Max Whitlock finished in the unfortunate fourth place in his last competition, just a tenth from bronze. His legacy will stay in the sport for years to come, truly inspiring a generation.
On floor, Carlos Edriel Yulo wrote his name in the history books as the first Olympic Champion in Artistic Gymnastics from the Philippines. Combining difficulty whit excellent form and execution, Yulo won the hearts of the crowd as his score of 15.000 saw him narrowly edge past defending Olympic Champion Artem Dolgopyat (ISR). Silver for the Israeli star ahead of Great Britain’s Jake Jarman.
On vault, GOAT Simone Biles (USA) put on a fabulous display, showcasing her out-of-this-world Yurchenko double pike for a massive 15.700. With 15.300 on average, she cruised to victory, ahead of Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade and Jade Carey (USA). Valentina Georgieva (BUL), the only European gymnast in the final, finished in fifth place.
