Russian girls dominate junior World Championships

From 27 to 30 June, the first ever Junior World championships were held in the Hungarian town of Gyor, site of the 2017 European Youth Olympic Festival.

The Russian girls were on fire, winning all but one gold medal. In the team competition. Viktoria Listunova, Vladislava Urazova and Elena Gerasimova scored a huge 111.654, cruising the victory. Listunova overcame a fall on beam in the first rotation to produce three excellent routines and claim the all-around gold with 55.323:

Apart from the beam, where there was some emotion for the first routine, it was almost perfect today. Everything went very nicely. I really enjoyed the floor routine. And Gyor has been very good. The set-up and training area are nice, and we prepared well today.

Teammate Urazova won the silver medal ahead of China’s Ou Yushan. In the apparatus finals, Kayla DiCello (USA) won vault with Great Britain’s Jennifer Gadirova in second place and Urazova in third. Urazova then went on to win the junior World title on bars ahead of Listunova and China’s Wei Xiaoyuan. Gerasimova claimed a gold of her own as well as she led the standings on beam while Listunova won her third and final gold medal on floor.

In the men’s competition, Japan was the force to reckon with. Their boys won the team gold and the all-around gold and silver plus the World titles on pommel horse and parallel bars. Ukraine won the silver in the team competition with 2018 junior European Champion on parallel bars Ilia Kovtun claiming the bronze medal in the all-around. His teammate Nazar Chepurnyi won the gold on high bar:

It was not easy getting used to a big hall and a big competition. It was a very nervous wait for the score, but I knew I’d done my routine really well. I was praying. But then it was strong enough for gold, and I felt brilliant.

Italy took the bronze in the team competition while Romania’s Gabriel Burtanete is the first ever junior World Champion on vault.
