On the last day of the 2021 TeamGym Europeans, the senior teams battled for a place on the podium. The afternoon unfolded as the sun shone bright in the Portuguese city of Guimaraes, and it turned out to be one for the history books.
The mixed teams opened the competition. As in the qualification round, Sweden proved too strong to beat. With the highest scores on all three apparatus, the Swedes cruised to victory, defending their title successfully. Two new countries wrote their name on the medal winners list. Great Britain claimed their first ever senior medal in TeamGym by finishing second, while Italy made its first appearance ever on the podium, in third place!
In the women’s teams final the battle couldn’t be tighter. Sweden and Iceland went head-to-head with the ultimate run determining the final ranking. Iceland needed 17.200 on tumble to equal Sweden’s total score of 57.250. And the Icelandic did exactly that! As the two countries’ tied, a tie breaker was needed. As Iceland posted the best scores on floor and trampet, they were awarded the title, last won back in 2012. Making their return to the podium, also for the first time since 2012, claiming the bronze medal, were the ladies representing Finland.
Last up, the ever-spectacular men’s final! Sweden outclassed everyone, even themselves, with a fabulous performance to finish with a massive score of 61.350. This guaranteed them the European title, their second one after victory back in 1996. An exciting fight for the other medals saw Iceland closing the competition on tumble. Equalling Sweden for the top score on that apparatus, the Icelandic men secured the silver medal, their podium finish in this category. Great Britain concluded a hugely successful Europeans with the bronze, also their first in this category. Shoutout to the men of Portugal who delivered a gorgeous floor routine to the delight of the Guimaraes’ crowd, the Azeri men for their sky-high tumbling including two triples and the Slovenian men for their spark and enthusiasm.
Congratulations to all medallists!
