The second day of the 15th TeamGym Europeans promised fireworks. The senior teams competed in their qualification rounds, showing spectacular skills on floor, tumble and trampet. Three routines, all three scores added together, to determine the final ranking.
The Women’s Teams kicked off the show, setting a fabulous standard. The Swedish ladies outscored their rivals on floor by more than a point which gave them the edge overall as well. Iceland performed best on tumble and trampet, placing second all-around while Denmark finished in third. Norway, Great Britain and Finland also advance to the final where the scores start from zero.
The rest of the day belonged to Denmark. First in the Mixed Teams, where the sparkling team outscored everyone … on all three apparatuses. With a lead of 5 and a half points over defending European Champions Great Britain, the Danes certainly set the bar high. Very high. The Brits edged Sweden by 4 tenths for second place with Iceland, Norway and a thrilled Italy joining them in the final on Saturday.
Of course, the Danish men could not be left behind. Inspired by their compatriots’ performances, they went flying through Baku’s National Gymnastics Arena. And they delivered big time. The record holding European Champions in the men’s competition, they also noted the best score on each and every apparatus, including a huge 22.850 on tumble and 22.000 on trampet. Sweden outscored Norway courtesy of a higher floor score. The difference just half a mark, so anything can happen in the final! Great Britain, Portugal and Italy advance too. Hosts Azerbaijan miss out, despite having entertained the home crowd with passion.
Qualified to Saturday’s finals:
Senior Women’s Teams
