Sweden firmly established themselves as the nation to beat in the senior category as they topped all three qualification sessions today in the Multiusos of Guimaraes.
Starting off with the mixed teams, Sweden posted the highest scores on floor and trampet while Great Britain was the best on tumble. Finland edged Italy by 3 tenths for the third place, with Portugal in fifth.
Eight women’s teams battled for 6 places in the final. Iceland matched Sweden’s score on floor, an impressive 20.700, placing second overall. A tight fight for third and fourth ensued between Great Britain and Finland, with the Brits taking the mental advantage ahead of Saturday’s final. We’ll also see France and Austria compete again on Saturday.
The biggest showdown always comes at the end when the men’s teams edge each other on with insane tumbling passes and triples on trampet. The Swedish men excelled on trampet, scoring 20.050, the only 20+ score of the day on that apparatus. They came close to 20 points on floor as well and tied Iceland on tumble with 19.000. To the delight of the Guimaraes audience, the Portuguese men gave it their all, holding on to third place with a passion. Great Britain, Azerbaijan and Slovenia added spice to the nordic mix and advance to the final.
